Rory Boland: Rory came out of retirement to play with Mark Moran. They have recently enjoyed successes as part of the new Irish team. Rory (playing with Pat Walshe) was on the first Irish team to win the Lederer along with Fitzgibbon and Mesbur. Rory also represented Ireland playing with Brian Senior (when Brian thought he was Irish). Rory was part of the winning Camrose team in 2000. Rory enjoys the odd pint and likes ferrying across the Irish Sea to haul back French wines.
John Carroll: Long time partner of Tommy Garvey they are the ‘babies’ of the team. When John gets a time off from bridge, he works as a software research and development manager. Married to Ann Marie, John is the proud dad of David and Zach. At the bridge table you will never see John be anything but cool and calm. His many bridge achievements include silver in Warsaw 2006, fourth in World Teams Championships in Lille in 2012, Silver in Cavendish Teams in 2013.
Tommy Garvey: Tommy has been partnering John Carroll for 20 years both on junior and open Irish teams and has shared in the same successes mentioned above. Tommy and John are frequent attendees at the Lederer and have brought home the trophy twice partnering Nick Fitzgibbon and Adam Mesbur. Married to the lovely Kit, Tommy is also a proud dad of Tristan and Killian. Tommy works as an actuary in London and wants to be a golfer some day! Partnering John, Tommy’s most recent success (January 2015) was coming 2nd in the Copenhagen Invitational Pairs.
Tom Hanlon: Achievements in bridge are numerous but include two Lederer victories with Hugh McGann. Tom plays with many top European and American players – he won the Dublin Regent Club’s 90th anniversary international pairs event (with Justin Lall) and was on the team that won the Gold Cup in 2016 (playing with Zia) and reached the semifinals of the 2017 Spingold. His longest-standing partner is Hugh McGann (10 days his senior). Tom and Hugh have been playing together for over 25 years and have represented Ireland on many Junior and Open teams. Tom is the only full time professional bridge player on the team. He has a son Colm.
Hugh McGann has been Tom’s partner for many years and his best performance was the European Team Silver medal in 2006, the European Open Teams quarterfinalist in 2003 and 2005, and also made the Bermuda Bowl team in 2007. Hugh is a double Lederer winner and has represented Ireland many time Camrose . By profession he is an infectious disease specialist in Leeds. He has also won several events with his girlfriend, England international Fiona Brown.
Mark Moran: Mark has been part of the current Irish Team since May 2013 and has enjoyed some excellent finishes notably the Silver spot in the Cavendish in 2013. Mark represented Ireland in the Camrose and was part of the victorious team of 2005 when he played with Peter Pigott. Mark has also captained the Irish Camrose team on several occasions and steered one such team to victory in 2000.
Mark graduated as a Chemical engineer, did an MBA and put his hand to many diverse employments. He is now semi-retired. Mark is married to Deirdre has four kids: Colm, Niamh, Clodaagh and Sorcha. A few years ago Mark and his wife climbed some of the highest mountains in the world including K2.
