Sally Brock has been playing on the English women’s team (on and off but more on than off) for the last 45 years or so, first as Sally Sowter, then Sally Horton and finally as Sally Brock, having married Raymond Brock (d2008) in 1993. In 2008, after a period of semi-retirement, she formed a last-minute partnership with Nicola Smith. They were part of the English team that won the 2008 World Mind Sports Championship. Together they won two European and two World Championships.
More recently Sally formed a partnership with Fiona Brown and they won silver in the 2017 Venice Cup, gold in the 2018 World Bridge Games and bronze in the 2020 Venice Cup. Sally lives in London and has three children, Toby, Briony and Ben, and two grandsons Hayden and Parker. These days her partner in life is Barry Myers. See Sally’s EBU profile.
David Burn has played for England in 7 Camrose matches, 1 European Championships and 1 World Olympiad. Domestically, he has won all the major trophies including The Gold Cup ( 2008 and 2010), Crockfords (2007), Spring Foursomes (2000 2003 and 2013), Brighton Pairs(1979 1989 1990 and 2001) and Brighton Four Stars Teams (1995 and 2004).
Perhaps best known for his coaching , he coached Britain to Bermuda Bowl silver medal (1987) and victory in the European championships (1991), has coached the highly successful England Women’s team over recent years, picking up numerous medals, including victory in the 2016 European Championships and silver medals in the 2013 and 2017 Venice Cups, also aiding the Senior team in their victory in the 2014 European Championships. He has also acted as NPC for recent Camrose teams.
He is also a popular bridge journalist, writing his own columns and often ghost writing for Zia Mahmood.
Richard Fedrick: I learnt bridge at home from my parents, but didn’t really play until university where I was a member of Raymond Brock’s prolific junior squad. After fifteen years away from the game to earn a living and do other stuff, I came back to the game in the mid-2000s. A modest list of successes includes Crockfords (2021) and the NICKO (2010 ish?).
Curious fact – David Burn and I are almost certainly the only all-Zimbabwean-born pair to play in the Lederer.
Barry Myers has won the Hubert Phillips in 2014, 2016 and 2019, the Tollemache in 2013 and 2014, and was a runner-up in the Gold Cup in 2015, 2016 and 2017 – all when playing with Sally Brock (who is also his partner away from the table). He has made three Camrose appearances: with Robert Sheehan in 1986, and again in 2015 and 2021 playing with Sally. He believes he holds the record for the longest gap between first and second caps.
Barry gave up the game for a number of years when he read for the Bar. He is still a practicing criminal barrister and between that and playing bridge he has little time for other hobbies. See Barry’s EBU profile.
