Boards 9 & 10 from Match 6

A couple of interesting defence problems on the last two boards of match 6.

The de Botton N/S pair (Lahrmann and Heiberg-Evenstad) get to a decent 4 spade contract. W (Tom Paske) overcalls 2 hearts along the way.

Paske leads KH and David Gold as East gives this some thought before ruffing it and playing the 8 clubs (a high card to say he doesn’t want a club returned). Paske cashes the AC then plays a little heart and Gold ruffs again. The small heart is a suit preference signal for clubs – Paske is hopeful of a club ruff but he won’t get one beause his trumps are not high enough. Gold cashes his AD before playing a club for two off. Nice work.

A swing for Black Adders on the last board of the set. 4 hearts was played at both tables but from different sides. Both opening leaders kicked off with a singleton but as you see only the 9 clubs was successful.

At one table the auction started 1C by E then 4C by S. X from W and 4H by east and X. by S to show he had a good hand for 4C. Now what to lead… Sadly the 10S didn’t work well.
